Zipp 404 - Pre-2006

General Info: Zipp's 404 is their most popular and versatile wheelset.  It is often used for road racing, cyclocross, time trialing, and triathlons.  As a result the amount of supply of this wheel is large and often the amount of demand is also large.  If you miss a Zipp 404 listing don't worry there are always plenty of them available for sale at any given time.   Often times triathletes will buy a set of 404's before graduating up to a 808/Disc wheel in the rear and either keeping the 404 front or upgrading to an 808 front.

202 Rear Hub Cassette Body (2002-2005)
Model Specific Info: 2005 404s had dimples but had an older 84/202  hub.  The rear hub body on this wheelset is easily identified by the silver colored cassette body opposed to the new bright red/blue cassette bodies. For the front there is no easy visual identifier to determine the front 84 hub from the newer 82 hub found in 2006-2008 404.  2004 and earlier 404s did not have dimpled rims.

Bottom Line: These wheels have hubs that are 3 generations old but can still be found in decent supply.  Very often sellers will misstate the years of these wheels.  If you are on a budget and want Zipp wheels you might looks at these.  Some of the bearings on the free hub can be complicated to replace though and buying wheels this old can be more hassle than they are worth.  You can probably forget about getting any support on Zipp on these as well and by the time you get around to reselling them you might just well have to thrown them in the trash because nobody will buy them.
